Join our Team to Visit Daylight in January ’14

We want you to join our team to visit Daylight January 4 – 18, 2014.*
Michael, Angelina, the Kimpur Family, the children at Daylight and the Staff are all excited to meet you! This is a two week trip that will allow you to experience the joy and hope that Daylight provides the children everyday.

As a trip team member, you will participate in Skill Sharing at Daylight. Skills Sharing is choosing a topic of interest to you (hobbies, abilities, talents) to present to a specific group (kids, teachers, mothers, etc.) at Daylight and the surrounding community. If you prefer, you may co-lead a skill-sharing session with another team member. This will be a fun way to interact with the community and share your knowledge. In turn, the staff and children of Daylight will share skills they have mastered (like cooking tea on an open fire, teaching a class without electricity, and how to milk a cow!).

Your travel experience may be “rugged” as the electricity may go out, showers may not be available daily, and you may be using outhouses. We will further discuss this and other Skill Sharing details at preparatory team meetings, so you will feel prepared for the experience. A travel guide will also be available on our website soon!

The cost of the trip is $1,300 plus airfare (~$1,300-$1,800); for an approximate total of $3,000. This includes all in-country costs (food, bottled water, transportation, sleeping quarters, Kenya VISA, and entry to a wildlife game park). NOTE: The cost of airfare will be due at the first team meeting in July.

Fundraising for your trip is encouraged! Most people who visit Daylight fundraise for their trip by sending letters to family and friends or hosting a fun event. Please contact rachel@daylightcenter.org for ideas on how to help offset the cost of your trip.

Trip applications are due June 30th!
Please note that applicants must be 18 years of age or older and that a $100 non-refundable deposit is required.

If you have any questions, please email info@daylightcenter.org or call 612-293-7476.

Soccer, Volleyball, Gravel Road, and Clean Feet!

It has been an exciting week at Daylight! The soccer field is now equipped with two goals! And across from the field is a new volleyball court. The kids at Daylight are playing soccer between classes, rain or shine.

Also, the road connecting the dormitory and the classroom is now gravel, instead of mud. Now that it is the rainy season in Kenya (alternating drizzle and downpour every afternoon), the teachers are grateful to have students with clean feet!

Last week, Daylight U.S. organized a team of runners for the Run or Dye 5k in St. Paul, Minnesota. One of the Daylight teachers saw the event on Facebook and wants to host a 5k event for Daylight in Kenya!

Special thanks to the Lindemann family for their support of Daylight sports, and to Ron Schaap for the gravel road!
